A group within the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, 'the Rescue Group' opposed to the emergence of Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff as National Chairman may have softened as  it mobilises for the party's National Convention tentatively scheduled for May  this year.

 In what observers described as dramatic turn-around, the PDP  Rescue Group has alligned itself to the party's position for Sheriff to remain in office till May. This position became apparent after the group rose from a meeting at Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Abuja.

 A  statement issued  after the meeting, signed by leaders of the group, Amb. Wilberforce Juta and Mr. Mukhtari Shagari, chairman and secretary respectively, explained that the group having met and deliberated,  resolved to among others, urge all party faithfuls, all party organs to be faithful to the decision (of the party organs), and to remain steadfast  and resolute in its implementation.

 "The Group notes with satisfaction the painstaking meetings and wide consultations that took place leading to the consideration and approval of the Timetable for the Congresses and National Convention of the party as announced by the party’s National Executive Committee. 

 "The Group is of the view that this decision, if strictly implemented, will go a long way in resolving the current challenges facing the party. The Group therefore applauds the efforts of the National Caucus, the BOT and the NEC of our great party in arriving at the decision. We believe that, given the consultations made leading to the final decision" the statement reads

 Further urging  all party members and organs nationwide to be law abiding, faithful to the party and ensure disciplined, transparent and credible Congresses and National Convention',  the Group further resolved whenever necessary, to consult with all party organs and leaders in ensuring hitch-free Congresses and National Convention; which  the group believes, is the panacea to the problems of the party.
