The Chairman/CEO, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Prof. James Momoh has urged Nigerians to support the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) so that the Agency could meet the critical local content need in revamping the Nigeria power sector. Prof. Momoh said this when he visited NASENI headquarters in Abuja. The NERC boss said “for Nigeria to have a stable power supply and to get it right in metering and distribution of light to citizens, working with NASENI is one way the country could subsidize engineering tools and also add value to the growth of the sector” According to him, NASENI has the vision and mandate for power sector research & development and therefore should be encouraged to carry them out” Prof Momoh said the Energy sector was indeed a challenge to the country. Nigeria did not have local content, he said. “We don’t have locally produced transformers that can work efficiently; and also there is dearth of research institutes to support the sector with knowledge and research” He however expressed confidence that all such challenges could be resolved if the nation could rally support for an Agency like NASENI. He expressed satisfaction with NASENI’s new breakthrough in the metering gap of the country with a recent successful design and local manufacturing of Made-in-Nigeria’s Smart Prepaid Energy Meter (SPEM). The product is currently at the stage of commercialization. Prof Momoh expressed hope that with sufficient resources and research capabilities, NASENI could continue to produce and develop meters for the country. “NASENI could be the organization which manufactures meters for the country. There is no research institute that is doing that yet. I believe NASENI is the only place where we can have all round research activities daily without a break. You have the skills and should take advantage of it”. He called on NASENI management to utilize the current opportunity to work for the nation in the power sector, noting that bringing innovation and research together was the way out and NASENI is one Agency that has demonstrated such potential. “I urge you to be the one to provide green energy resources for Nigeria. You can do it if you channel your resources to it and I know NASENI has the indigenous technology to do it”. The NERC Boss said he was in NASENI to discuss future collaborations with the Agency and to condole with both management and staff on the recent loss of three (3) senior staff of the Agency. He said NERC and NASENI could collaborate in various areas to ensure that Nigeria gets it right in the power sector. “I am here to discuss future collaborations with NASENI and we are looking forward to working together for the nation”. In his response, NASENI boss, Prof. Mohammed Haruna thanked Prof. Momoh for having confidence in NASENI. He disclosed that the NERC Chairman had always been a part of NASENI family and motivator. The NASENI’s Chief Executive said the Agency was willing to develop areas of collaboration with NERC since it had been offered the opportunity to do so. He said the Agency would offer technical assistance to NERC through collaborations while disclosing also that NASENI, already, was working in the power sector to ensure that Nigerians enjoy consistent power supply”.
