Ali Modu Sheriff Faction

If Senator Ali Modu Sheriff persists in claiming that he remains the National Chairman of the PDP, he will have some rag-tag followership, composed mostly of follow decampees from APC.

Sheriff, three times Senator and former governor of Borno State is driven by his ambition. He harbours too the fear of being out  in the cold without the trappings of power

His admirers hail him as the strongman of Borno politics, but from the happenings in Port Harcourt, it appears he is yet to  master the intricacies and subtlety  of national politics.

Obviously sheer ambition made his desperate, showing  him the mirage that he could  sneak in through the back door to lead the PDP.

Sheriff also allowed some governors with vaulting ambtion to lead him by the nose. But perhaps what set him spinning off  course was the vicious missiles he hauled at Prof Jerry Gana in a bid to silence him. His apology hours later
was perceived as an after-thought and failed to save him

He equally scoffed at the protesting voices arguing that the action of the National Executive Committee of the party in selecting him
as national chairman was in gross violation of established procedure for the selection.

Some PDP chieftains had insisted that: ``The selection of the chairman for the unexpired term of the North-East zone started with nominations from states in the zone. But Sen. Sheriff was not nominated by any state caucus and hence not qualified to be selected,’’ he said.

The Governors Faction

The Governors faction of the PDP is the faction that gave Senator Ali Modu Sheriff the Port Harcourt shocker. The active players in  this faction are serving governors and money bag former governors angling for future political offices. The group also comprises  former prominent office holders including former National Assembly members, Ministers and others.

It was this group that propped up Sheriff to the consternation of the Jerry Gana faction. Dominant voices  in this group include  Ekiti State Gov. Ayo Fayose and Gombe governor Ibrahim Dankwambo both of whom gave Sheriff false hopes that the governors run the party.

This is the faction that  on Saturday dissolved PDP's National Executive Council, National Working Committee (NWC) and  set up a seven-man Caretaker Committee.

The faction equally  set aside decisions taken by the NWC and zoning of its presidential candidate for 2019 election to the north.

It also  also set up a seven-man caretaker committee headed by Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, a former governor of Kaduna State,  while Sen. Ben Obi was appointed as its secretary. The other members of the committee were Sen. Odion Ugbesie, Sen. Abdul Ningi,  Mr Kabir Usman, Mr Dayo Adeyeye and Alhaja Aisha Aliyu.

The Elders 'Jerry Gana's Faction  -  Concerned Peoples Democratic Party Stakeholders

Prof Jerry Gana is the arrow head of the Concerned PDP Stakeholders comprising what appears as the few original founding fathers of the party. These group of former-this-and-former-that find themselves  being gradually played out of relevance in the scheme of affairs.

This faction which once played against Senator Ali Modu Sheriff formerly of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP have other fears. They fear, this  former governor of Borno State does not measure up to the quality of leadership that could galvanise and build the new PDP. Gana may not be a money bag politician, but he is certainly not a push-over, His intellectual clout and deep knowledge and mastery of the workings  of the PDP makes him an oracle of sorts in the party.

He was the party's founding national secretary in 1999, and former Secretary of the BoT and original member of G39.

A  former  Minister of several portfolios, Gana has been around the political scene since the Second Republic when  when he served briefly as a Senator before the military coup of 1983.

His best outing was unarguably as director of the Mass Mobilization for Social Justice and Economic Recovery, popularly known as MAMSER  under General Ibrahim Babaginda's administration.

Ali Modu Sheriff's greatest undoing was to have tangoed with the smooth-talking former university professor.

The Co-Chairman of the Gana faction - Concerned Peoples Democratic Party Stakeholders - Sen. Ibrahim Mantu crows that they have achieved all
they wanted:

* "We were opposed to the zoning and indeed the zoning has been cancelled or set aside.

* "We were also opposed to the convention, and the convention did not take place courtesy of the court.

* "Again, we were opposed to the way the congresses have been conducted, that, they fell short of our expectations.
Now these congresses and conventions have been set aside.

"This group can confidently say that we have achieved all the targets we set to achieve," Mantu stated.
