After three attempts, President Muhammadu Buhari was finally elected president on March 28, 2015. He was sold by his handlers to Nigerians as a staunch anti-corruption fighter, and  an incorruptible and honest leader.

While campaigning for the office, Buhari made several promises, for instance, quick end to the Boko Haram menace in North-East Nigeria was one.  This was the period the insurgents  had captured 14 local government areas in Borno State  and hoisted their flags there. They had also taken  200 Chibok school girls  hostage.

 What stood out as Buhari was coming to power? Oil prices were tumbling,  to  as low as $30 per barrel, the lowest since 2010. Huge debts were owed  to contractors and suppliers. Twenty-seven states owed several months of salary arrears.  Corruption and impunity were the order of the day. 

 Before Buhari's emergence, Nigeria was like a kwashikor-ridden child whose swollen features and pallor was mistaken for good health. Overall, infrastructure, notably rail, power, roads were in a decrepit state. The Nation's four refineries in a state of disrepair, while the pipelines and depots were at the mercy of all kinds of miscreants.

 One year down the line, no two Nigerians would agree that the Buhari Presidency has lived up to expectations or had kept his campaign promises.

 Nonetheless, theledgerng.com could identify  ten definers of the Buhari's first year in office.

1.  Hope Restored

 For the people of Nigeria's North-East, millions of whom were becoming internally displaced persons, President Buhari restored hope. To contain the menace of Boko Haram insurgency, he  moved the Tactical Command of the Army  to the theatre of war and Boko Haram is fast  becoming history. The wings of Boko Haram had been clipped, and  the insurgents no longer had the capacity to carry out the kind of spectacular attacks for     which they became notorious.
2. Impunity Curtailed

  Pervasive corruption, hitherto  the country's bane, is being tackled headlong, and  Nigeria’s external image improving in respect of  anti-corruption crusade . "What the Buhari government has done in trying people for corruption is unprecedented in Nigeria,  therein lies the change" says an official of the administration 
   Today, the issue of corruption has become topical in the national discourse and corrupt persons are no longer able to flaunt their ill-gotten wealth with impunity,  as in the past era 

 3. The Vulnerable  Remembered

 Buhari has launched Nigeria's first social protection programme. The  programme is  aimed at kick-starting the process of lifting many    
citizens from poverty, while simultaneously creating opportunities for people to fend for themselves. N500 billion has been appropriated in the 2016 budget for    such social intervention programmes. For the first time over one million economically vulnerable Nigerians would benefit from a conditional cash transfer scheme. 

 4. Employment Creation

 The Buhari administration targets job creation opportunities for 500,000 teachers and 100,000 artisans across the nation.

 5. Agenda For Children and Women

  Also for the first time about  5.5 million Nigerian school children would be provided with nutritious meals through  school feeding programme with the objectives of improving learning outcomes, as well as enrollment and completion rates. 

 For women, a national women’s empowerment fund, would be funded to the tune of  N1.6 billion to provide  micro-finance loans to women across the nation to assist in rehabilitating the economies of rural communities. Women, particularly impacted by the insurgency and conflict are targeted.

 6. SMEs Boosted

  The Buhari administration has also launched  the enterprise programme  –  which will target up to one million market women; 460,000 artisans and 200,000  agricultural workers nationwide.

 7.  Support For Education

 The education grant scheme,  will encourage students studying sciences, technology, engineering and maths, and lay a foundation for human capital development.   

    
8. Savings For Rainy Day

 The Buhari administration contrary to insinuation is working very hard to contain the economic challenges  brought about by falling oil prices, and on-going     
economic reforms  would save the nation N23 billion annually.

 9. Corrupt Officials Docked 

 In a massive swoop on corrupt officials,  today, close to 35 top officials of the previous administration are standing trial on corruption charges in various     
courts, while several of them have returned the money they stole secretly.
10. Leakages Plugged

 The Buhari administration on assumption of office set out to plug all financial loopholes through its introduction of Treasury Single Account (TSA), and progress   reports so far state that trillions of naira had  been saved.

Through the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information system, 43,000 ghost workers were weeded out  representing pay packets totaling N4.2 billion stolen every month. Twenty-Three Billion Naira per annum from official travelling and sitting allowances alone would also be saved
