Prof Uade Ugbomoiko, a Zoologist at the University of Ilorin, has cautioned people to beware of contacting pubic lice through sexual intercourse. He  gave the advice in an interview on Tuesday in Ilorin.

He explained that contagious parasite such as Amoebae, Trichomonas, Giardia, Scabies and Pubic lice were parasites contacted through sexual process.

``Pubic lice are parasitic insects found primarily in the public or genital area of human beings and this pubic lice is found worldwide and occurs in all races, ethnic groups, and all levels of the society,” he said.
According to him, these lice resemble miniature crabs that feed on human blood and can occasionally be found in the coarse body hair, such as hair on the legs, armpit, moustache, beards, eyebrows or eyelashes.
The zoologist also explained that the choice of a host among parasite species is influenced by the phylogenetic and environmental factors.

He added that if the environmental and physiological factors in a host are adequate for survival and development of a parasite such host becomes susceptible.

Ugbomoiko disclosed that parasite infect both human and animals worldwide with prevalence and mortality in many regions. He said that about 300 species of parasitic worms and over 70 species of parasitic protozoa infect man and few of these have become adapted to humans and notoriously deforming and disabling the affected.

The don pointed out that the greatest number of the parasitic infection occurs in equatorial regions of the world, tropical and sub-tropical regions of Asia, Latin America and sub-Saharan African countries such as Nigeria.
