European Uniion, EU Interior Ministers are set to hold emergency talks on the thousands of migrants streaming into Europe as some countries remained divided over plans to redistribute 120,000 people.

The development followed a weekend of intense diplomacy as EU governments have been at odds on whether asylum seekers should be redistributed across their 28 member states.

The bloc has been grappling to find a common response to the biggest inflow of migrants and refugees since World War II.

Thousands continue to flee war-torn countries such as Syria, with Germany the most popular destination for most of those arriving in the bloc.

Around 10,000 migrants have entered Germany daily over the past week, after Berlin said it would not turn back Syrian nationals on Sunday.

The country reintroduced controls on its border with Austria to help manage the inflow.

``Both states are part of the Schengen border-free zone.

``We need to set a signal now that solidarity is not a one-way street,’’ German Minister of State for Europe, Michael Roth, said in Brussels on Monday.

Roth added that ``close obligatory cooperation’’ was needed to tackle the refugee crisis.

``It is absolutely indispensable to have a global, coherent European response to the refugee crisis,’’ added his French counterpart, Harlem Desir.

``An obligatory relocation mechanism is needed, all 28 member states must accept a share of the refuges,’’ Desir added.

They were both in Brussels for a regular meeting of EU Ministers for European Affairs, who also had the migration crisis on their agenda.

The interior ministers are due later to discuss a European Commission proposal that 120,000 asylum seekers be redistributed within the bloc from Greece, Italy and Hungary - the three nations that most recently have seen the most significant influx in migrant arrivals.

But the proposal has faced opposition from some countries as Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, have raised objections to the proposal.

In the same development, EU President Donald Tusk, has said that he will call a special summit on the migration crisis if the ministers do not display ``solidarity and unity’’. (dpa/NAN)
